Jacksonville, FL — Arthritis Management & Joint Therapy

Arthritis Management in Jacksonville, FL — Move Better With Less Pain

The morning stiffness lasts longer than it used to. Your knees hurt on the first three stairs. Your hands ache when you open a jar. Your hip wakes you up at night. You’ve been told it’s arthritis and there’s nothing to do but take medication and wait until it’s bad enough for a replacement. That’s not true. Arthritis management through targeted therapy, aquatic exercise, and joint protection techniques can reduce pain, improve function, and slow the progression — often enough to delay or avoid surgery altogether. At Dolphin Pointe Health Care, our arthritis program gives you a plan that works alongside your medication, not instead of it. Call 904-914-8801 to schedule an evaluation.

Arthritis management is one of the most misunderstood services in rehabilitation. Most patients think therapy can’t help arthritis because the cartilage is already damaged — and they’re right that therapy can’t regrow cartilage. But cartilage damage isn’t the only thing causing pain. Weak muscles around the joint increase stress on the joint surface. Stiff joint capsules restrict movement and create friction. Poor movement patterns load the joint unevenly. And inactivity — the most common response to arthritis pain — accelerates every one of these problems. Targeted therapy addresses all of them. At Dolphin Pointe, our arthritis management program combines manual therapy, progressive strengthening, joint protection education, and aquatic therapy in our heated pools — where warm water reduces joint stiffness, supports body weight, and lets you move through full range of motion without the compression that triggers pain on land. We serve both inpatient and outpatient clients at our physical therapy clinic inside our rehabilitation center in Jacksonville’s Arlington neighborhood.

What Arthritis Management Includes in Jacksonville

Our arthritis program targets the modifiable factors around the damaged joint — the muscles, the joint capsule, the movement patterns, and the activity habits that either protect the joint or make the damage worse. Your therapist evaluates joint range of motion, muscle strength around the affected joint, gait mechanics (for hip and knee arthritis), hand function (for hand and wrist arthritis), and how pain is affecting your daily activities. From that evaluation, we build a program with three components. First, manual therapy — joint mobilization to restore lost range of motion, soft tissue work to release tight muscles, and gentle stretching to reduce stiffness. Second, progressive strengthening — low-impact exercises that build the muscles supporting the arthritic joint so the joint bears less load during daily activities. Third, aquatic therapy — warm water exercise in our heated pools that lets you strengthen and move the joint with 50 to 90 percent of your body weight offloaded.

We also teach joint protection techniques — how to lift, carry, climb stairs, get out of a chair, and open containers in ways that reduce stress on the arthritic joint. For patients with hand and wrist arthritis, our occupational therapy team provides adaptive equipment training — jar openers, built-up utensils, ergonomic tools — that make daily tasks possible without the pain that standard gripping and twisting produce. For patients whose arthritis is part of a broader chronic pain picture, our pain management program addresses the full scope of symptoms. And for patients who are building strength before a planned joint replacement, our pre-surgical conditioning program — sometimes called “prehab” — puts you in the best possible physical condition before surgery, which research shows leads to faster post-surgical recovery. Patients from Arlington, University Park, Fairways Forest, and across Jacksonville work with our team on arthritis goals measured by function: “can you walk the dog,” “can you garden for 30 minutes,” “can you go up and down the stairs at home without stopping.”

Why Arthritis Management Matters in Jacksonville

Arthritis is the most common chronic joint condition in adults over 50 in Duval County and across Florida. Osteoarthritis — the wear-and-tear form — affects knees, hips, hands, and spines in millions of Americans, and the prevalence increases with age. In Jacksonville’s growing population of older adults, arthritis is one of the top reasons patients reduce activity, avoid exercise, and gradually lose the strength and mobility that independent living requires. The standard medical approach — anti-inflammatory medication and eventual joint replacement when it gets bad enough — leaves a gap of years where the patient is in pain but not “bad enough” for surgery. Arthritis management therapy fills that gap by reducing pain, improving function, and preserving joint health for as long as possible.

Jacksonville’s year-round warm climate is actually an advantage for arthritis patients — cold weather tends to increase joint stiffness and pain. But the heat and humidity can reduce activity motivation and make outdoor exercise uncomfortable. Our climate-controlled facility and heated aquatic pools provide an environment where arthritis patients can exercise consistently regardless of the weather outside. Most outpatient PT clinics in Duval County include arthritis exercises as part of a general therapy plan. At Dolphin Pointe, arthritis management is a focused program with its own evaluation, treatment progression, and coordination with our orthopedic rehabilitation team. Families from Colony Cove, Woodmere, Springfield, Mandarin, and across Duval County choose Dolphin Pointe for arthritis therapy because we treat the condition as an ongoing management program — not a six-visit prescription that ends when the insurance authorization runs out.

What to Expect During Arthritis Management

      1. Referral and joint-specific evaluation. Your physician or rheumatologist sends a referral. Your therapist evaluates the affected joints — range of motion, muscle strength, joint stability, gait mechanics (for lower body), and hand function (for upper body). We also assess how arthritis is affecting your daily activities to set functional goals.

      2. Multi-approach treatment plan. Based on your evaluation, your therapist builds a program combining manual therapy, progressive strengthening, aquatic exercise, and joint protection education. If multiple joints are affected, we prioritize the ones that are limiting your daily function most and expand from there.

      3. Land and aquatic therapy sessions. Sessions typically combine land-based manual therapy and strengthening with heated pool exercise. Frequency is usually two to three times per week for outpatient, daily for inpatient. Your therapist tracks pain levels alongside functional benchmarks — because the goal isn’t just less pain, it’s more activity.

      4. Ongoing management and home program. Arthritis is a chronic condition. When the initial treatment goals are met, your therapist provides a home exercise program and joint protection strategies for daily life. If ongoing maintenance therapy is appropriate — and for many arthritis patients, periodic check-ins keep the condition from regressing — we schedule it before your last session. Your physician receives a full progress report.
