Physical therapy rebuilds strength and movement. Occupational therapy rebuilds your ability to use that strength in real life. The difference matters. A patient might regain full range of motion in a shoulder after surgery — but still struggle to reach a cabinet, pull a shirt over their head, or wash their own hair. That’s the gap occupational therapy fills. At Dolphin Pointe, our OT team works with patients recovering from strokes, hip replacements, hand and wrist surgeries, spinal procedures, brain injuries, and neurological conditions. We train patients on adaptive equipment when standard tools won’t work anymore. We run home safety evaluations before discharge to make sure the home is ready for the patient — not the other way around. And because we’re inside a full rehabilitation center, your occupational therapist coordinates directly with our physical therapy and speech therapy teams when your recovery needs more than one discipline.

Signs You May Need Physical Therapy

Occupational therapy isn’t just for severe disabilities. It’s for anyone who has lost the ability to do something they used to do without thinking. If any of these sound familiar, an OT evaluation can identify what’s holding you back and build a plan to fix it.

      Our Occupational Therapy Services

Our occupational therapy program is built around the activities that define independence — bathing, dressing, grooming, cooking, eating, toileting, and moving safely through your home. For patients recovering from stroke, joint replacement, spinal surgery, hand injury, or brain injury, our licensed therapists evaluate which daily tasks are affected, identify the specific physical or cognitive barrier, and build a treatment plan that targets each one. Sessions happen in our therapy gym and in simulated daily living environments where patients practice real tasks — not just exercises.

When a patient’s body has changed permanently — a hand that no longer grips the way it used to, a shoulder that won’t reach overhead again — our adaptive equipment training teaches patients how to use tools that bridge the gap. Long-handled reachers, button hooks, built-up utensils, dressing aids, and specialized kitchen tools let patients do things independently that they thought they’d lost the ability to do. We also offer daily living skills training programs for patients who need structured, repetitive practice with the specific activities they’ll face when they return home. Patients from Arlington, University Park, and Fairways Forest work with our OT team on these functional goals every day.

Before any patient goes home, our home safety evaluations assess the living environment for fall risks, accessibility barriers, and equipment needs. We look at bathroom layout, stair access, lighting, flooring surfaces, and furniture placement. We then make specific recommendations — grab bars, raised toilet seats, stair rails, threshold ramps — and train the patient to move safely in their own home. For families in Springfield, San Marco, Riverside, and across Duval County, this evaluation is often the final step before a safe discharge.

      Occupational Therapy in Jacksonville

Our occupational therapy program covers the full range of daily living rehabilitation. Patients recovering from stroke, hip replacement, knee replacement, hand surgery, brain injury, and spinal procedures work one-on-one with a licensed occupational therapist. We evaluate which daily tasks are affected — dressing, bathing, cooking, eating, toileting, transferring — and build a treatment plan that restores each one. Sessions combine exercises to rebuild strength and coordination with real-world task practice in our therapy facility. We serve both inpatient residents and outpatient clients from Colony Cove, Woodmere, and across Jacksonville.

      Adaptive Equipment Training in Jacksonville

When an injury or condition permanently changes how your body works, the right adaptive equipment can restore independence. Our therapists train patients on long-handled reachers, button hooks, sock aids, built-up utensils, jar openers, dressing sticks, and other specialized tools designed for patients with limited grip, reduced range of motion, or one-handed function. Training isn’t just handing someone a tool — it’s practicing the technique until it becomes automatic. Patients from Mandarin, Regency, and Orange Park work with our OT team to learn equipment use before they go home.

      Home Safety Evaluations in Jacksonville

The safest rehab in the world doesn’t matter if the patient goes home to a house full of fall hazards. Our home safety evaluation program assesses the patient’s living environment before discharge — bathroom accessibility, stair safety, lighting, flooring surfaces, furniture placement, and entryway access. We identify risks, recommend modifications (grab bars, raised toilet seats, threshold ramps, non-slip mats), and train the patient to move safely through their own home. For families in Gilmore, Lake Lucina, and Arlington Manor, this evaluation gives everyone peace of mind that the transition home is safe.

Daily Living Skills Training in Jacksonville

Daily living skills training is structured, repetitive practice with the specific activities a patient needs to perform at home — getting in and out of bed, getting dressed, bathing, using the toilet, preparing a simple meal, managing medications. For patients recovering from stroke, brain injury, or prolonged hospital stays, these tasks may need to be relearned from scratch. Our therapists break each activity into steps, practice each step in our therapy setting, and build the patient’s confidence and speed until they can perform the full routine independently. Patients from the Arlington Hills, Downtown Jacksonville, and Southside neighborhoods work with our team on these functional goals daily.

Occupational Therapy for Jacksonville and Northeast Florida

Most outpatient therapy clinics in Duval County focus on physical therapy. Occupational therapy is often an afterthought — a few sessions tacked onto a PT plan. At Dolphin Pointe, occupational therapy is a full program with its own evaluation process, treatment goals, and discharge criteria. Our licensed occupational therapists work one-on-one with patients — not in group sessions — and coordinate directly with our physical therapy, speech therapy, and nursing teams when a patient’s recovery crosses disciplines. That level of integration is rare in a standalone outpatient clinic.

Our facility in the Arlington neighborhood gives OT patients access to resources most clinics don’t have — a simulated daily living environment for task practice, two heated aquatic therapy pools for patients who benefit from water-based movement, and a 24-hour nursing staff for inpatient residents who need support between therapy sessions. Our partnership with Jacksonville University keeps our clinical team current on the latest OT techniques and evidence-based protocols.

We serve patients from Arlington, University Park, Fairways Forest, Colony Cove, Woodmere, Gilmore, Lake Lucina, Springfield, San Marco, Riverside, Avondale, Mandarin, Regency, Orange Park, Southside, Downtown Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach. We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicare. Call 904-914-8801 to schedule your first visit.

What to Expect at Your First OT Visit

We keep the process simple and focused on your specific goals. Here’s what happens from your first call.

      1. Schedule and insurance verification. Call 904-914-8801 or contact us online. Our admissions team verifies your insurance coverage and schedules your evaluation. Most patients are seen within a few days of their first call.

      2. Initial OT evaluation. Your occupational therapist reviews your medical history, surgical report, and physician referral. Then they assess your ability to perform daily living tasks — dressing, bathing, grooming, eating, transferring, and hand function. This evaluation identifies exactly where your barriers are.

      3. Goal setting and treatment plan. Based on your evaluation, your therapist sets specific functional goals — “able to dress independently,” “able to prepare a simple meal,” “able to shower safely without assistance.” You’ll know what you’re working toward at every session.

      4. Treatment sessions. Sessions are one-on-one with your assigned therapist. You’ll practice real tasks, learn adaptive techniques, and build the strength and coordination needed for daily independence. Frequency depends on your condition — typically two to three times per week for outpatient, daily for inpatient.

      5. Home safety review and discharge. Before you go home, your therapist conducts a home safety evaluation to identify fall risks and recommend modifications. You’ll also receive training on any adaptive equipment you’ll use at home and a home exercise plan to maintain your progress.
